Small Business Saturday

I really don't want to work on my paper right now.  So here's another blog post.

Have you heard of Small Business Saturday? It's today!  This is an interesting initiative which hit the news because a number of Occupy people have been rooting for it.  The idea is that instead of mobbing Wall-mart on Black Friday and giving all your dollars to big business, to go do your shopping at small businesses.

An interesting case of caught in the middle

Yesterday Quebec students staged a large protest against tuition hikes.  As a director on Concordia's Graduate Student Association (GSA) representing the business school, I find myself torn, both in how to represent my constituency and in how I feel about the situation.

Green and Pink Part 2

Persuant to my previous post about the prevalence of green and pink in advertising and branding now, I decided to take a short walk to see how much I would come across.  This walk was from JMSB at the corner of Guy and de Maisonneuve all the way to Atwater metro by way of St. Catherine's street in Montreal. Google maps tells me this walk is 8 blocks.

Green and Pink

The other day Sherri and I stopped into a food court to pick up a quick dinner as we were in a rush.  She commented to me that the new colour scheme that everyone seems to be using for their logos is green and pink.  Have you noticed this too?

Complexity and acquired tastes

I wanted to talk about acquired tastes.  Those of you who know me well have probably heard me talk about this a few times before.  I've got a hypothesis, a conjecture if you will, as to the nature of acquired tastes.

Menus and Packages

It's been a few years since I've been to a butcher. I had a bad experience with the butcher near my house. I guess he had had a bad day because he yelled at me for asking that the 10 lbs of ground beef I was buying be put in separate bags instead of one big bag. Ever since I just went to the grocery store. But a couple of weeks ago I went shopping with my friend Keith and he introduced me to a butcher in Lasalle where they have menus!

Level Up!

I was thinking about games and what makes a game fun and addictive. The answer, is leveling up.

This is especially true for flash games on the Internet. The games with a lot of achievements, level ups, upgrades, badges, perks and bonuses are the ones people play online. Even games with boring gameplay, like tower defense, become fun when you can upgrade your weapons.
